Interior Design Debate: Yay or Nay to Having a TV in the Bedroom

Interior design is an art form that shapes our living spaces, transforming ordinary rooms into expressions of our personalities, tastes, and lifestyles. It is an intricate blend of creativity and practicality, working together to make our homes not just beautiful, but functional and comfortable. An essential aspect of interior design is carefully considering each room's purpose and how it can best serve its function.

As everyone is different, everyone will have their own unique needs and visions for their homes. One common issue that often arises is the question of whether or not to include a television in the bedroom. It's a topic that sparks debate among homeowners and designers alike, and today, I would like to share my thoughts and insights on this matter.

But first, what do YOU think?

Importance of Room Functionality in Interior Design

In interior design, room functionality is paramount. It's not just about creating a visually pleasing space, but also about creating a space that works for the people who live in it. This means considering the purpose of each room and how it can best serve its intended function.

A bedroom, for instance, is primarily a place of rest and relaxation, a sanctuary away from the hustle and bustle of the rest of the house. But in contemporary living, it has also evolved to serve other purposes. For some, it can be a place of work, a mini library, a personal cinema, or even a makeshift gym. This multifunctionality of modern bedrooms presents a challenge in interior design: how to balance aesthetics, comfort, and functionality.

The Concept of Television in the Bedroom

The concept of having a television in the bedroom is a divisive one. For some, it's a comforting presence, providing entertainment and relaxation before sleep. For others, it's a disruptive force, causing distractions and hindering quality rest.

From an interior design perspective, a television in the bedroom can be seen as an element that adds to the room's functionality, providing entertainment and convenience. However, it can also present challenges in maintaining the room's tranquility and restfulness. As with any design decision, there are pros and cons to consider.

Pros of Having a TV in the Bedroom

There are several benefits to having a television in the bedroom. Firstly, it provides a personal entertainment space. Whether you’re unwinding after a long day with a favourite show or catching up on the news in the morning, a TV in the bedroom offers convenience and privacy.

Secondly, for couples or families sharing a living space, having a TV in the bedroom can provide a solution to differing tastes in entertainment. It gives you an alternative space to watch your preferred shows without disturbing others.

Lastly, from a design perspective, a television can be integrated into the room's decor in a way that enhances its aesthetic appeal. With the right placement and design considerations, it can become a stylish feature rather than an eyesore.

Cons of Having a TV in the Bedroom

Despite its benefits, there are also drawbacks to having a television in the bedroom. One significant concern is the potential disruption to sleep. Studies show that screen time before bed can interfere with the body's natural sleep cycle, leading to poor-quality sleep.

Moreover, a television can detract from the restful and calming atmosphere that a bedroom should ideally have. It can become a source of noise and light pollution, particularly in small bedrooms where space is at a premium.

From a design perspective, incorporating a television can pose challenges. It necessitates additional considerations such as where to place it for optimal viewing, how to manage cables and wires, and how to ensure it complements the overall decor.

What Experts Say about Televisions in Bedrooms

Opinions among experts vary when it comes to televisions in bedrooms. Some interior designers advise against it, citing the importance of maintaining the bedroom as a space for rest and relaxation. Sleep experts, too, often advise against TVs in the bedroom due to their potential to disrupt sleep.

However, others argue that with the right design considerations, a television can be successfully integrated into a bedroom without negatively impacting its function or aesthetic. Ultimately, the decision comes down to personal preference, lifestyle, and sleeping habits.

Tips for Integrating a Television in Bedroom Design

If you do decide to include a television in your bedroom design, there are several tips you can follow to ensure it complements your space.

Firstly, consider the placement carefully. The TV should be at a comfortable viewing height from the bed and not cause any glare.

Secondly, manage cables and wires effectively. Conceal them within the wall or furniture to maintain a clean and uncluttered look.

Thirdly, consider incorporating the TV within a piece of furniture, such as a cabinet or console, so it can be hidden when not in use.

Alternatives to Having a Television in the Bedroom

If you're unsure about having a television in your bedroom, there are alternatives to consider. You could create a reading nook with a comfortable chair and good lighting for a relaxing retreat. Or, consider incorporating a sound system for music or audiobooks. This can provide entertainment and relaxation without the potential sleep disruption of a screen.

Another option is to use a projector instead of a traditional television. This can provide a cinematic experience without taking up space or disrupting the room's decor when not in use.

Many people these days opt to use their personal devices to watch television. You can easily hide a tablet in a night stand for example.

Balancing Entertainment and Relaxation in Bedroom Design

Balancing entertainment and relaxation in bedroom design can be challenging but achievable with thoughtful planning. The key is to consider your lifestyle and personal needs. If you enjoy watching TV before bed and it doesn't interfere with your sleep, then incorporating a television into your bedroom design could be a good fit.

However, if you find screens distracting or detrimental to your sleep quality, it may be best to keep the bedroom as a TV-free zone. Consider other forms of entertainment that can provide relaxation and enjoyment without the potential drawbacks.

Why I Love Having a Television in My Bedroom

As an interior designer, I appreciate the challenges and rewards of incorporating a television into a bedroom design. Personally, I love having a television in my bedroom. It offers a convenient and private space to unwind with my favourite shows. It also allows for those lovely lazy weekend mornings.

My husband travels a lot. And when the kids are in bed, and it is dark and gloomy outside, there's nothing better than curling up in bed with my favourite trashy shows that I can only ever watch when I am by myself, without commentary. I am sure many of you will know what I am talking about.

With careful placement and design considerations, I’ve managed to integrate my TV into my room's decor. It enhances the functionality of my space without sacrificing aesthetics or comfort. I have painted the wall my television is mounted on black, so it is no longer the big black monster in the room, but blends in.

Conclusion: Making the Right Interior Design Decision for You

Interior design is a deeply personal process. Each decision should reflect your individual tastes, lifestyle, and comfort. When it comes to the question of having a television in the bedroom, there's no right or wrong answer, only what works best for you.

Consider the pros and cons, consult with experts if needed, and make a decision that will enhance your bedroom's functionality and aesthetic. After all, your bedroom is your personal retreat, and it should serve your needs and preferences above all else.
